Cake, what’s that?

Ok , so we all know what a cake is these days, even though it comes in all different shapes and sizes but what does cake mean?
The dictionary describes one as:
“An item of soft sweet food made from a mixture of flour, fat, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients, baked and sometimes iced or decorated”
A very simple definition really but does it works. What it doesn’t quite give you is the emotional side. A cake to me means:
“A treat that is great for everything from a quiet cup of tea to a big family gathering. Something that a single bite can send you back in time to the memory of baking with your gran as a child and a smell that works better than shouting the kids in for tea.”

For Queen Victoria cake was very important. As a child Victoria felt deprived of sweet treats, she decided as queen she would soon change that. In came the cake and the famous Victoria Sponge. In fact the palace ordered each week’16 chocolate sponges, 12 plain sponges, 16 fondant biscuits, one box of wafers…one and a half dozen flat finger biscuits…one princess cake and one rice cake’. I think she liked cake 😉
